Obituary

When a life ends, it may be referred to as the final chapter of a book or perhaps a precious rose picked from the garden.  I'd like to consider my life as the theme and chorus of a son that has been chosen to bear only my name "Jean".  A one-of-a-kind song with its own "special" sound, and key reflecting a note that formed a loving and lasting melody entitled  "Family and Friends".
                                                     E. Jean Phillips-Hudson

Her Arrival
As surely as God is love, on Monday April 21, 1941, in Edwards, Mississippi, a baby girl was lovingly welcomed by Chester and Eva Phillips and given the name Earmia Jean Phillips.

When She Met the Lord
Jean received Jesus Christ as her Savoir the age of twelve.  She was baptized and became a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church.  Her parents brought her up in the ways of the Lord.  Her mother always taught her to love and reach out to others, even when confronted with hate.

Her Appreciation for Knowledge and Work Ethics
Jean attended school in Edwards Mississippi and  graduated from William Holtzclaw High School in Utica, Mississippi and attended Utica Jr. College for two years.  Jean was one of the incorporators of the Delta Resources Committee (DRC).   She joined the staff as bookkeeper at the request of the late Jake Ayers.  She possessed experience, ability, integrity, concern and commitment and was ideally suited to serve on the DRC staff.

In 1965, Delta Ministry, gave her the avenue she needed to become involved in the Civil Rights Movement at Mount Beulah.  It took courage because it was extremely dangerous to become involved.  Jean worked as a staff member for Congressman Mike Espy.  At the time of her demise she was employed by USDA as the EEO Assistant and Civil Rights Coordinator.

The Matriarch
Truly, Jean touched so many lives throughout  her years of service in the Civil Rights Movement.  However, Jean always put her family first.   She left her employment to take care of her aging and ailing parents.  With her resources she built them a decent home to live in during their latter years.  She was also a surrogate mother to her nieces and nephews and they all called her "Bae".  On December 3, 1996, she married her best friend and love of her life, Frank Raymond Hudson.  They would remain together until his demise on July 8, 2015.

One to Remember
Throughout her illness, Jean refused to be defined by her illness in any other way than healed.  And healed she is!  "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord (Psalm 117:17)" could be found on her lips.  Her faith and trust in God combined with an abundance of continuous love and prayers helped sustain her.  On Sunday, December 13, 2015, at 2:15 p.m., at her home on Morris Road with family  and friends beside her, the Lord closed the earthly chronicle of Jean's life and opened the chapter that will live into eternity.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Raymond Hudson; her parents Chester and Eva Phillips; brothers, Jasper Phillips and James "JW" Richardson.

Her life, legacy and love will forever be cherished by her sisters, Mary Irving, Alice Irving and Deborah Ross of Chicago, IL nieces:  Rosie Lee Myles of Jackson, Mississippi, Laura Dotson of Edwards Mississippi, Eva (Eddie) Palmer of Charlotte, North Carolina, Beverly Smith of Rockledge, Florida, Dinah German of Raymond, Mississippi, nephews: Jasper Phillips, Leon Phillips, Robert Phillips all of Jackson, Mississippi , James Lee Phillips of Edwards, Mississippi and JB Phillips of New Jersey; Berdia (Lynn) Copper of Edwards, Mississippi Whom she considered a sister; special friends:  Darnella (Wilson) Murray of Terry Mississippi and Pam Willis of Hattiesburg, Mississippi;  Godchildren  Shannon and Gail Coleman, great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
