Obituary

Mr. John Henry Anderson, Sr., the youngest of four siblings, was born November 28, 1933 in Edwards, Hinds County, Mississippi, to the late Mr. Shedrick and Mrs. Irene Anderson.

He received his formal education at Bakers Creek School #1 and Edwards Jr. High.  Mr. Anderson was an outstanding basketball player and was known for being the tallest player on the court.

He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1954 after a brief stay in Toledo, Ohio.  A Short while after moving to Los Angeles, he met up with his good friend, the late L. S. "Tommy" Miller, know to some as "Foots".  After high school, Mr. Anderson worked numerous jobs in sanitation and was employed by the Metropolitan Waste Company.  The majority of his employment was spent as a driver for Waste Management in Los Angeles, California where he worked along with his friend "Foots".

After retirement, Mr. Anderson moved to Mississippi in 2003.  In a decision to recommit his life to Christ, he united with St. James Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful and supportive member until his death.

Affectionately known as "Chico" by his family and friends, he had a quiet demeanor and was known for his height and beautiful head of hair.  He was very generous in his giving and believed within his heart that no one should go without.  The bible teaches us in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, "But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity:  for God loveth a cheerful giver."  This spirit of giving was indicative of Mr. Anderson's spirit and belief as he gave to his church, family and others as well.

In December of 2016, Mr. Anderson's health began to decline.  As a result, he entered Heritage House for rehabilitation.  During his brief stay at the Heritage House, the staff affectionately referred to him as "Gandalf" a character from the Lord of the Rings, because of his height and more noticeably his beautiful white hair and bread.  Not only was he known for his appearance, he was also known for his pleasant and humble spirit.

On Tuesday, February 21, 2017, just a few hours after a lengthy visit of fellowship, laughter, and reminiscing about their good times together with two of his daughters, Mr. Anderson looked up at them with a bold yet gentle voice and bid them a "TOO DA LOO", A term of endearment he often used when bidding them goodbye upon a departure.  Shortly after they returned back home, at approximately, 5:20 p.m., Mr. Anderson succumbed to death as he heeded God's calling to a servant well done.

He was preceded in death by one son, Stanley White, one sister, Louise Harris, twin brothers, Lloyd and Floyd Anderson.

Cherishing his precious memories are; his six daughters, Janice Anderson of Lancaster, California, Jacqueline Denny Anderson of Edwards, Mississippi, Joyce Marion Anderson-Mitchell, Joann Anderson and Jorain Anderson all of Los Angeles, California, Javanda Anderson of Long Beach, California; one son, John Henry Anderson, Jr., of Lakewood, California; a special cousin, Benix Henry, 20 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
