Obituary

Ogden Edward Wilburn, (affectionately known to everyone as "Big O"), a dedicated law enforcement officer, laid down his shield and went to rest with the Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2014.  He was the second-born child of the late Ms. Willie Earl Wilburn, born August 28, 1963, in Yazoo County, Mississippi.   He attended Yazoo County Public Schools, where he excelled both academically and athletically.  He also attended Holmes Junior College and Jackson State University.

Ogden was first recruited by the Yazoo City Police Department and later graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy.  This marked the beginning of a nearly 30 years career in law enforcement during which he served with the Flora Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff's Office, Simpson County Sheriff's Office, State Capital Police, Mississippi Baptist Health Services Security, and as a Director of Public Safety for the Mississippi State Fair Commission.  Throughout his career he earned over 30 certifications in the field of Law Enforcement.

Ogden and his wife Barbara are members of the New Jerusalem Church family.  He loved people and they loved him. While working with security for the Kroger Company, he witnessed a lot of excess food being disposed of that could be used to help those in need.  It broke his heart to see people needing food and then witness food being thrown away.  He met with the Mississippi Center of Police and Sheriffs, a non-profit organization about helping to develop a program that would benefit The Kroger Company  as well as the community.  For more than 10 years Ogden and Barbara operated a food program where they went all over the metro area distributing food to the needy and the elderly.
Each Sunday morning started with 7:00 a.m. service at New Jerusalem and after service they headed to the Kroger Stores for pick up.  Some days they distributed until late evenings.  He loved God and loved to sing His praise.  His favorite praise song was, "Bow Down And Worship Him".

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Barbara Wilburn; daughters, Nola Larry, Kiki Larry and Constance Chandler, all of Hinds County, Mississippi; granddaughter, Kristen Larry, Hinds County, Mississippi; sibling, Kevin Green, Louis Clifton, John Clifton and Ivera Clifton; step-siblings, Frank Clifton and Elaine Clifton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, all who will miss him dearly.

Wow, it is hard to say good bye, just talked with you and Barbara (the leopard pumps) yesterday. When I did your wedding many years ago, never knew where that road will lead you both, but once to live, then, well to to soon... My prayers are with Barbara, oh how she's gonna miss the love of her life, my heart goes out to her... but I promise to be there for her and the girls, for it's even harder for her to say good bye to yesterday. May you rest in peace my friend, Mayor Wilburn...:) love Angela

Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse. Ogden Wilburn gave to those in need, Unselfishly, Modestly and Free from Boastfulness. Powerful in strength, gentle as a child. My Friend.

"BIG O" will be sadly missed by many. I am honored to say I worked next to him. Few men possess a kinder soul. The world will be short one great man, however our Lord and Savior has gained a mighty warrior. Rest in Peace my friend.

Big O introduced me as his friend about 2 weeks after we meet for the first time, I have always remembered that. I have always considered him mine. He always was a positive person and those people are few. I will miss him but more than me, he will be missed by all that met him. He had a way of touching your heart by his trying to give you a hard time. It was an honor and a privilege to have known him. RIP my brother in blue! Your friend, T

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

R.I.P BIG "O" my friend!

To those who knew him, yes, Big will--no, is missed! I called him in Aug '14 to tell him his Aunt Irma of L.A. had passed and him joy of the end to her suffering was apparent! I had been trying to get my 1st cousin to come to Arizona for meeting/reunion of the Yazoo City contingent of the Smith family and the solid southern group. We had promised to see it so but his suffering was also ended. I love you Ogden, and Barbara he is watching over his family from on high.
REST IN PEACE my gently giant cousin!! Ivera--call me!!!
