Obituary

On February 15, 1950, a handsome baby boy was born to Leora Carthan and Willie Earl Woodland. His grandparents James and Mary Carthan reared him and at the age of ten they adopted him as their son. His family and friends in the Tchula Community affectionately called him "Billy".

Willie united with the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church more than forty years ago under the leadership of the late Dr. W.D. Carr, and remained a faithful member of New Bethel under the leadership of Pastor F.R. Lenoir where they bonded spiritually after being diagnosed of his illness. He shared an amazing testimony with his church family on the power of God's healing.

His educational experience included graduating from Tchula Attendance Center High School in 1966; matriculating to Mississippi Valley State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree and furthering his studies at Jackson State University and receiving a Master of Science Degree. Willie was very active with the Mississippi Valley State Alumni Association.

Willie enlisted in the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge on June 7, 1977. He also retired from United States Postal Service in 1955 and from the National Guard in 2009. While serving in the National Guard his tours of duty included Kuwait and Iraq.

He was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Rachel Howard on September 1, 1974. To this union one child was born, Omeka Carthan who was the apple of his eye. He also gained a son who preceded him in death Renderyll Howard.

He leaves to celebrate his memories: a wife and friend Rachel Howard Carthan of Jackson, Mississippi; his children: Omeka Carthan, Jamela Carthan, Alexis Carthan and Ja'Kayla Charthan all of Jackson, Mississippi, Lardexter (Cynthia) Hicks and Stephanie Hicks both of Chicago, Illinois, Barbara Ann Common of Tchula, Mississippi, Melia Dixon Bradley of Miami, Florida and Patricia Hutchinson of Columbia, South Carolina; goddaughters Renae Lee of Dallas Texas and Staci Moore of Atlanta, Georgia; his siblings: Dr. Eddie (Shirley) Carthan of Tchula, Mississippi, Luther Carthan of Chicago, Illinois, Maxine Williams of Detroit, Michigan and Lucille Sams of Harvey, Illinois; grandchildren; nephews; nieces; brothers and sister in law.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, James and Mary Carthan, Leora Carthan Matthews and Willie Earl Woodland; children Renell Blanden and Renderryl Howard; grandson Renderrick O'Quinn; siblings Ruthes Anderson Jr., Norma Jean Martin, Cathy Clark, Joseph Carthan, Elmore Carthan, Eugene Carthan and Warrine Epps.
