Obituary

Betty Blanche Hughes was born March 6, 1929 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to David and Nellie Hughes.  Betty grew up on a farm in Ethel Mississippi along with her two brothers and two sisters.  She attended to her grandmother who lived with them while her brothers and sisters worked in the fields.  She fondly told this story with a smile.  Betty attended Mt. Zion AME in Ethel Mississippi where she accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.

With her parents' encouragement she moved to Jackson, Mississippi to attend Campbell College.  There she developed skills as an outstanding basketball player playing the position of left handed guard.

It was at Campbell College where she was introduced to her future husband by his brother McCray Davis.  Later she would relocate to Chicago, Illinois where she married Samuel Davis.  They were blessed with three children, Sam Barbara, and Lawrence.

Betty worked for University of Illinois Hospital where she retired after thirty-seven years of dutiful service.  Her dedication to job was acknowledged in the many awards received over the years including the distinction of Employee of the Year.

In Chicago, she joined New Exodus Baptist church where she served for many years in the kitchen and children's nursery.  At church she was often known for her keen fashion sense, always coordination from head to toe.

Betty was fond of family and friends.  She often had family over for Sunday dinners, cooking huge feasts for all to enjoy.  Betty was also fond of listening to Blues and Country music and playing cards, especially Bid Whist with family.

In recent years Betty moved to Jackson, Mississippi to be near her family which she cherished so much.  Here she enjoyed sitting under the trees in the country with her in-laws' and many family barbecue cookouts.

On Saturday morning, June 20, 2015, Betty peacefully passed away in her sleep.  Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, one son (Lawrence David) a brother (David Hughes) and two sisters ( Etta Thomas and Beulah M. Blumingburg).

She will be cherished, loved, and remembered by:  her brother, Ernest (Betty) Hughes of Indianapolis, Indiana; son, Sam L. Davis of Indianapolis, Indianapolis; daughter, Barbara McGee of Jackson, Mississippi; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and very special In-Laws.
