Obituary

Mrs. Verlean Lewis Holmes, affectionately known as "Lil Girl" was born August 25, 1936 in Hinds County, Bolton, Mississippi, to the late Willie L. Lewis and Perlean Tucker-Lewis.  She was the youngest of two children.

She confessed Christ at an early age and was a member of Tye Water Missionary Baptist Church in Bolton, Mississippi.  Mrs. Holmes attended school in the Hinds County Public School System.

She was joined in holy matrimony to Dave Holmes, Jr., on February 23, 1957, and moved to Joliet, Illinois, where they resided for 46 years.  Mrs Holmes joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Isaac Singleton, Sr., where she was an active member and served on the Nursing board for many years.  She later moved back to Mississippi where she became a member of Brownsville Missionary Baptist Church where she was active until her health failed.

Verlean was a devoted church member and wife; a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She adored her parents, and shared a very close relationship with her one and only brother.  She gave her best to her family, friends, and neighbors, and she extended her love by helping others, and also by cooking those famous cakes.  She had a great sense of humor and was a joy to be around.  She was always full of laughter and love.  Verlean never met a stranger.  She will be missed greatly.

Verlean was called home to rest on the morning of Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Central Mississippi Medical Center surrounded by family.  She is preceded in death by: her parents,  Willie L. Lewis, Sr., and Perlean Tucker-Lewis; one brother, Willie L. Lewis; father-in-law, Dave Holmes, Sr.; mother-in-law, Corene Phillip-Holmes; three sisters-in-law, Thomasine Wilson, Mary Louise Warren and Anna Mary holmes; and four brothers-in-law, Albert Lee Holmes, Clifton Holmes, Cleather Holmes, and Cleotha Holmes.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: a loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Dave Holmes, Jr.; one daughter, Earlean Lewis Bradley; one son-in-law, Willie Earl Bradley; two grandchildren, Gabriel Reshard Bradley and Jarkarta Bradley Garrett (Michael); five great-grandchildren, Jacquez "J-Roc" McKay, Generrow Bradley (Carolina), JaBrien "Jay" Garrett, Gabrielle Bradley, and Jadyn "Chunky" Garrett; four sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Lewis, Willie B. Holmes, Eva Mae Harris, and Rose Holmes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
