​Ms. Charlene B. Miller,  funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church, Jackson, MS at 10:00 a.m. She will repose in the church at 9:00 a.m.  Visitation will be Friday, February 15, 2019  from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p. m. at Willis and Sons Funeral Home 5235 Robinson Rd Ext., Jackson MS.   Interment: South Pleasant Hill Cementary, Prentiss, MS.  ​

Obituary

Ms. Charlene B. Miller, surrounded by her loving family, departed this earthly life to be present with the Lord on Monday, February 11, 1019 in Brandon, Mississippi. She was the seventh of fourteen children born on a beautiful Christmas day in 1942 to the late to Benjamin F. Bourne, Sr. and Liggie Mae Bourne in Prentiss, Mississippi.

At an early age, she confessed Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at South Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Prentiss, Mississippi. She was very active in Sunday School, youth department and choir ministry. She often talked about her childhood, growing up in Prentiss where she was well known for playing the piano and directing choirs at various churches in the community.

Ms. Miller later united with New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Young. She loved gospel music and she loved going to church! She loved New Hope and was an active and faithful member until her health began to fail in late 2018. Ms. Miller had a melodious alto voice and she truly believed in making a joyful noise unto the Lord. She was a proud member of the New Hope Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir and New Hope Baptist Church Mass Choir. Additionally, she participated in the General Missionary Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, Inc. as a faithful Adult Choir member until her illness. Her fellow choir members grew to know and love her for her warm spirit, and infectious smile. She would light up any room and will always be remembered by her speak and her exuberant personality.

Ms. Miller's educational journey began in the Jefferson Davis County School District where she completed elementary school at Lucas Attendance Center, and matriculated through Prentiss Normal & Industrial Institute for her middle school years. She was a member of the J.E. Johnson High School graduating class of 1961. Upon graduating from high school, Ms. Miller began her post-secondary studies at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. She completed two years of study at Alcorn and made many wonderful, lifelong friends on the Reservation.

Upon entering her junior year of college, Ms. Miller continued to be drawn toward her passion for styling hair, and it was then that she decided to pursue her dream as cosmetologist. Following her heart, she relocated to Jackson, Mississippi and enrolled in cosmetology school at Jackson Poro Beauty School. After successfully completing cosmetology school and earning her license, Ms. Miler began a very prosperous and rewarding career in the field of cosmetology.

In 1963, Charlene married Charlie Miller, and they were the parents of two lovely children, Stanley and Ronda Miller.

Ms. Miller owned and operated Hairs-N-Things Beauty Salon in the Jackson-Metropolitan are for over 40 years. She also gave her time, talents and gifts by serving as a cosmetology instructor at Charm Beauty School and the Career Development Center for Jackson Public Schools. Over the years, Ms. Miller organized and hosted a number of hair and fashion show extravaganzas, and she was well known for her cosmetology skills and talents. She was the recipient of many accolades in the field of cosmetology and was recognized a number of times by the City of Jackson for her entrepreneurial success. She was active in numerous organizations and in addition to being devoted to beauty and fashion, she had a heart for mentoring barbers and cosmetologists. She was known and loved by many in the cosmetology industry for helping upcoming barbers and stylists launch their careers and successfully establish themselves in the business sector. Many of her mentees referred to her as a "Top Notch Diva" and would often consult with her for advice and tips concerning cosmetology and entrepreneurial.

Although Charlene decided to retire and sell her salon in 2017, that did not stop her desire to continue serving in the field of cosmetology. It was after he retirement that she decided to work part-time, styling hair for her residents at Cottage Grove Nursing Home and Chadwick Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She maintained her part-time employment with both facilities until her health failed.

Ms. Miller was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Liggie Mae Bourne, Sr., seven siblings, J.B. Bourne, Roosevelt Bourne, Jerlean Oden, Levell Bourne, Benjamin F. Bourne, Jr., Nathaniel Bourne, and Patricia Bourne.

Charlene loved her family, and she proved her love through countless acts of kindness, compassion, support, and dedication. Her legacy shall live on through the lives of her family; her children, Stanley (Stephanie) Miller, and Ronda Miller of Jackson, Mississippi; one granddaughter, Xia C. Miller; six sibilings, Lula B. Norwood of Ontario, California, Willie V. Pippin, Adelbert (Lenora) Bourne, Ida (James, III) Reed, Jerry D. Bourne, Sheilia Bourne all of Jackson, Mississippi; an incredible group of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ms. Miller's life was an example of love, faithfulness, diligence, kindness and patience. Her legacy will live on forever. all praises to God, Father of our Lord Jesus for a life well lived.

Ms. Charlene Miller's kindness, genuine concern and pleasant spirit will email missed. She was an encouraging Christian and astute business woman whose walk with the Lord was evident in everything. The Bourne and Miller Families are in my thoughts and prayers.
