Doris Beatrice Gray Taylor was born on October 3, 1929, the youngest child in a family of 16 children (six girls and ten boys) of the late Prince Albert Gray, Sr., and Carrie Hicks Gray. She grew up in Edwards, Mississippi, and Attended SCI (Southern Christian Institute). She moved to Washington D.C. to live with her oldest sister Ada G. Phillips Hospital had trained the largest number of black doctors and nurses in the world.
She furthered her nursing education by receiving an RN degree, from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.
Doris served as a Pediatric Nurse at The Woman's Hospital in Cleveland, and was featured in an article for her compassion and care of the children she served. Her last place of service was the Veterans Administrative Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi.
Her interest included gardening (especially roses), playing the organ and reading.
Doris was baptized at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and when she returned to Edwards, Mississippi later in life, she was a faithful member, until she was confined to home due to a long-term illness.
