Obituary
Myrtis Marie Lyles Jarrett was born March 14, 1937 in Hinds County, Edwards, Mississippi, brought added joy when Myrtis Lyles arrived to the happy parents of Charlie Lyles and Reba Broome Lyles. Who knew then the plan God had for "Be Be," as she was called, to become a wife, mother, teacher/educator and an accomplished pianist.
Her family moved to Gary, Indiana, and united with the Van Buren Missionary Baptist Church where Myrtis confessed her belief in Christ and grew up attending and participating in church activities.
She was the first African American student to attend Beverage Elementary school, Gary, Indiana. Myrtis completed high school at the historical Roosevelt High School. Sister Jarrett attended Jarvis Christain College, Marshall, Texas, and completed her Bachelor's degree at Purdue University, Hammond, Indiana. She earned her Master's degree from Indiana University, Northwest, Gary, Indiana.
Myrtis united in holy matrimony with Joe Jarrett. God blessed them with a precious daughter, Renita Jarrett.
Myrtis loved teaching and spent a rewarding career instructing students in the primary grades in Gary, Indiana, and a short while in the Jackson Mississippi school system.
Being an accomplished musician, Myrtis spent many years playing for the Koinonia Missionary Baptist Church Senior Choir. She freely shared her musical talent by spreading God's message through Christian music.
The educator retired and returned to Edwards, Mississippi, to care for her ailing parents. She joined the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church and remained active there until she began playing for Belmont Missionary Baptist Church, Utica, Mississippi, which she later joined.
The Christian mother decided to return to Gary to assist her daughter, Renita, with the care of her brother, Ruben Lyles. While there she continued sharing her music at the Koinonia Missionary Baptist Church and for special events.
When her daughter received an offer for assistance with her uncle, Mrs. Jarretts, daughter and brother moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Mrs. Jarrett remained until God received her into His Arms.
Preceding her in the crossover were her parents, Charlie and Reba Lyles, along with and a precious niece, Dr. Evette Monai Lyles.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter: Renita Jarrett, Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, William Lyles (Naomi), Gary, Indiana, and Reuben Lyles, Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Mary Lyles Watkins, Gary, Indiana; four nieces, Denise Spears (Chris), Roz Lyles, McKinney, Texas, Lori Jenkins (Larry) Gary, Indiana and Angela Senior (Kippy), Marietta, Georgia; three great nephews, Cory Spears, Brandon Spears, McKinney, Texas, Leneire Lockett (Frieda), Schererville, Indiana; one great niece: Lyrica Wright, McKinney, Texas; two great-great nieces, Kamryn Spears, and Anaya Gray, McKinney, Texas, two God daughters Keisha Davis, and Sherry Porter, Gary, Indiana; a friend-like son, Charles Grand, Jr., and a hot of other family members and friends.
