Obituary
Ruth Jones Childs was born on October 23, 1937, in Elaine, Arkansas, to Robert and Rosie Jones. She departed this earth on November 24,2018, at the Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. She met and married Roy Edward Childs in 1953, while he served in the military and lived at the Air Force Base in Greenville, Mississippi. Four (4) children were born to this union; Rosalyn, Marilyn, Saundra and Derrick. Her parents, one sister, Jessie Jones Young, two daughters, Saundra Childs Edward and Marilyn Childs Hobson, all preceded her in death.
After completing her education in the Greenville Public School System, Ruth received an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, MS. She worked in Greenville Public Schools as a secretary in the counselor's office at Coleman High School for many years and later moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1980 after raising all of her children. She was ready for advancement and improved financial opportunities. She lived with her youngest daughter, Saundra, for a short while.
While in Chicago, she was employed at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) University as the Supervisor of the mail room. She supervised student workers and managed the post office. Her career there began as a receptionist and she worked her way up the ladder. She was compassionate of others, committed, friendly, enthusiastic, encouraging to those around her and loved by the students and staff. She loved the Christian environment and daily expressions of Jesus Christ and the warm Christian relationships. She worked there for 20 years and retired in 2011. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Chicago where she sang in the adult gospel choir for many years. She was also a member of the Lutheran School of Theology Gospel Choir. She enjoyed singing about Jesus and sharing the messages in song to others. Her daughter, Rosalyn and son-in-law, Ed, moved her to Jackson, Mississippi in September, 2001. She was flown back to Chicago for a huge retirement and appreciation celebration by the Staff at LSTC in October, 2001.
Ruth settled in quickly in a retirement apartment. She made new friends quickly and was ready to offer assistance where needed in her community. She and her daughter, Marilyn, bonded and they were together daily. She took residents in her building to the bank, doctor, grocery store, or wherever they needed to go every month. Regular road trips were made to Greenville to visit her sister and son. She offered her clerical skills to Rosalyn's insurance office when needed also. She was known as the 'Chicago Lady' in her apartment building because she was a lady that dressed with a flair in many of the latest fashions. Ruth loved dressing for any event, day or night. She was very conscientious about looking her best wherever she went.
She had a love for clothes, hats, and jewelry. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and family members were very special. She had fun with her grands by taking them many places, purchasing many things for them and spoiling them. They referred to her as GG. She was passionate about others and never met a stranger. She was passionate about her arts and crafts and setting up at flea markets. She met many people, smiled and was very happy in her entrepreneurship. She enjoyed her retirement and made many new friends upon returning home in Mississippi.
Ruth joined Cade Chapel M.B. Church to join her first cousin, LuBerta Mixon (Dorsey), her daughter, Rosalyn and son-in-law, Ed. She was a member of the Angelic Choir and joined the Circle of Charity in 2001. As a Christian woman, she did not mind sharing the love of Jesus with you! She loved her church and was an active member until her health began to fail in 2006. She resided at Lakeland Nursing and Rehabilitation Home for two (2) years and previously at Pleasant Hills for over eight (8) years. She often sang at events, attended bible study and church services as a resident.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two children, Rosalyn (Ed) Childs Sylvester and Derrick Childs, both of Jackson, MS; one god daughter, Brenda Funches of Jackson, MS; five grandchildren, Wanda (Virgil) Johnson, Tina Hobson, Derrick Edwards, Mario Johnson and Curtis Houston; eight great grandchildren, Bianca Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Ti te'ara Gates, Kayniyha Robinson, Katelyn Edwards, Donovan Edwards and Ashya Edwards; one first cousin, Lueberta (Dorsey) Mixon; lifelong friends, Bernice Smith, Naomi McClendon and Lola Wellington, all from Chicago, Illinois and Vera Haywood of Greenville, Mississippi, Jo Ann Daniels (Booker T.) of Jackson, Mississippi, Joyce Chambers (Dewitt, Ark) and a host of nieces, nephews and other friends.
