Mrs. Willie Mae Carr, funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018 at New Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church, Jackson, MS at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Willis and Sons Funeral Home 5235 Robinson Road Ext., Jackson MS. Interment: Natchez Trace Cemetery, Madison, MS.
Obituary
Willie Mae Carr, was born January 11, 1936 to the late John W. Lockett and Louis Jones in Scott County, Mississippi. Willie Mae accepted Christ as her savior at an early age. She was baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist faith at a very young age and remained a dedicated member. Sister Carr served many years as a deaconess and served in other ministries in the church. While in California, she visited the prisons with the Prison Ministry Team at San Jose Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church, San Jose, California. Willie was also a member of the King Daughters organization for several years.
She was a previous member of the Berean Seventh Day Adventist Church of Jackson, Mississippi, and later transferred to New Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church of Jackson, Mississippi.
Mother Carr was noted as one of the mothers of the church, she loved her church family and treated Pastor John Parker like her own son. Willie Mae loved singing for the Lord. She joined a quartet group with her father, JW Lockett and later in her life continued to lift up the name of the Lord by becoming a member of the renowned Voices of Faith Choir and served as a counselor. In the nineteen eighties, she was a member of the Starett Gospel Singers who recorded their first single "Oh Mary Don't You Weep," with Willie Mae as lead singer.
She was married to the late Tommy Laster, Sr. in 1953. To this union five children were born. She later married James Carr in 1976.
Willie Mae was educated in the Hinds County School System and attended Lanier Sr. High School; she completed her 11th grade there and later received her GED. She went on to complete a program at a Vocational Training School to become an O.R. Technician for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for over twenty-seven years until her health failed. She received numerous awards for her outstanding work achievements.
Willie Mae Carr, resided in San Jose and San Diego, California with her husband James Carr before they returned to Jackson, Mississippi. She was a dedicated and hard worker no matter where she lived.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Jones of New Orleans, Louisiana, Beverly Ann Laster (oldest daughter), and Tommy Laster, Jr. (Son).
She leaves and overwhelming amount of memories to be cherished by her caring and supportive husband James Carr; her loving and caring children, Panganena Laster Wilson (sons, Javen (Jaminic) of Jackson, Mississippi, and Brandon Richard, Tuscaloosa, Alabama), Regina Laster-Johnson (Albert) and (daughters April Laster and Jasmine Johnson), of San Diego, California, and Joyce Laster-Reedom (Dean), Orlando, Florida and daughter Valencia Johnson (David) of Los Angeles, California, two great grandchildren Rashaun Wilson and Ryan Johnson as well as a host of sister-in-laws and cousins.
She also leaves memories to be cherished by her friends she cared and loved alone the way of her journey.
