Rev. Rufus Whipp, funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Society Ridge, Jackson, MS at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be Friday, January 25, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p. m. at Willis and Sons Funeral Home 5235 Robinson Rd Ext., Jackson MS. Interment: Society Ridge Church Cementary, Jackson, MS.
Obituary
Reverend Whipps accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Society Ridge Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully. He was a member of the Male choir and served as the Inspirational Choir President. He was crowned deacon on September 4,1977 under Reverend J.C. Rankin where he was called to the Ministry on February 19,1978 and preached his first sermon. He was later ordained on February 11, 1979 also under the leadership of Reverend Rankin. He served as pastor at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Canton, Mississippi and Mt. Center Missionary Baptist Church, Raymond, Mississippi. He was a member of St. Paul Lodge #343.
He graduated from Summer Hill High School in 1955. On May 24, 1959 he married Mary Alice Wells and they were married for 51 years until her death in 2010. To this union three children were born; Doris, Larry and Leon.
Reverend Whipps departed his earthly home on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Alice Whipps; brothers, Joe A. Whipps Jr. and Edgar Whipps, Sr.; and sisters, Earlene Houseworth and Everlean Gater.
Family members left to cherish his memories are: daughter, Doris Whipps; sons, Larry (Wynee) Whipps and Leon (Erica) Whipps, Sr.; five grandchildren, Ashley (Terrian) McGhee, Lary (Arielle) Whipps, II, Jasmine (Thaddeus) Macklin, Jada Whipps and Leon Whipps, Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, Kayden McGhee, Zyon Whipps, LaMiracle Whipps, Kassidy McGhee, KeJuan Whipps, Aiden Whipps and Jeremiah Macklin; one brother, Sims (Earnestine) Whipps, Sr.; one sister, Mary Jane Whipps; four brothers-in-law, L.V. Gater, Reverend Spencer Hosueworth, Eddie Wells and Bobby (Ozella) Wells; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Wells and Mary Ann (John) Rose, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
